“The progress of mankind, onward and upward forever!” declared the 19th century Unitarian James Freeman Clarke, the fifth and final point of his New Theology. “God is change,” wrote Octavia Butler, the central tenant of her invented, post-apocalyptic religion, Earthseed. Change is inevitable. But there are so many ways change can happen. So many ways we grow and develop. Can we learn, as Butler instructs, to shape change?
