“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,” wrote Coleman Barks, controversially adapting the poetry of Mevlana Jallaludin Rumi, “there is a field. I’ll meet you there.” Learning happens in myriad ways, taking a multitude of forms. Sometimes processes designed to educate end up inflicting harm—some are even intended to. As UUs, we tend to place a high value on the learning of the intellect, sometimes to the detriment of the other powers of the soul. This Sunday, as we celebrate our year with intern minister Joe Gabaeff, let’s also celebrate the highest form of learning: the growth of that mysterious quality some call the soul.
