“The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” intoned Martin Luther King Jr, paraphrasing the 19th century Unitarian minister Theodore Parker. Forces that have long roiled in the soul of America are erupting in a moment of necessary conflict, a moment pregnant with both redemptive and oppressive potential. As we live through a “pandemic on top of pandemic,” a reckoning with the systematic devaluation of Black Lives, what is our part to play in bending the arc toward justice? As we gather for our annual meeting in this moment of great uncertainty, let us reaffirm the fundamental purpose of religious community: to hold us together with a moral vision that spans generations in service of Beloved Community.
